The information provided on this page is dynamic and is updated according to the information you have entered in the search form. If you search with changed search criteria, this page will be updated.
Based on the search criteria you have specified, the system performs a double search: in the dataset metadata and inside the dataset itself. The metadata search provides a ranked list of datasets that match the query, their basic metadata and links to access them (web addresses that allow displaying, downloading or accessing the datasets in different formats). Searching inside the datasets provides access to the subset of elements (faults, boreholes, mines, etc.) in the dataset that respond to the textual and spatial search performed. If any of the two searches return results, the dataset is displayed in the list of results.
Therefore, according to the information you have entered in the search form, the list of results shows those datasets:
- whose metadata (title, description or keywords) meet the search text entered.
- whose boundary intersect with the spatial delimitation inserted.
- that are relevant to the selected topic categories.
- that are of the selected types.
- that have an on-line access of any of the selected formats.
- if the search text has not been found in the dataset metadata, but contains elements (records, documents, faults, mineral occurrences, etc.) that do contain the search text and are inside the spatial delimitation set.
Text search
You have entered the text . However, the system does not only search based on this text. It has processed your search text to improve and enrich the search and get better results. Through the multilingual thesaurus, the system will obtain the narrower, broader and related terms and translations related to each of the words obtained from the search string. Thus the system will be able to find relevant datasets even if the search text does not fully match the dataset's metadata (for example, a user searching for ‘gold’ may find datasets that do not include the word ‘gold’ in their metadata, but do include the word ‘precious metal’). When ranking the results, the system gives more importance to datasets that include typed terms, their synonyms and translations than broader or narrower terms. The arrays of terms used in the search are the following:Tokens

The spatial search makes it possible to limit the results obtained to a certain spatial area. The geometry indicating the area you selected is shown in following WKT string:In addition, the spatial delimitation set is also one of the factors used to establish the order of the results. Those results whose delimitation is closer to the one indicated in the spatial selector tend to be displayed higher in the list of results. So for example, if you are looking for information on a small area (e.g. a village), it is likely that maps at a national or European level will be displayed further down the list of results. If two datasets have a similar scale (e.g. two sheets of a series of maps at 1:50.000 scale), the one that has more area of intersection with the search area will be displayed higher in the list of results.
Topic categories
You have chosen to display in the results list only those datasets relevant to the selected topic categories:
A dataset may be of interest for one or different topic categories: geohazards, mineral resources, groundwater, etc. However, datasets sometimes do not cover equally well one topic category and another. For example, a geological map may be more or less important for the theme "Mineral Resources", but it will not be as important for this topic category as, for example, a database of mineral occurrences. Thus, if only one topic category is selected, the system tends to put at the top of the list of results those datasets that best cover that topic. If several themes are selected, those datasets that are most relevant to any of the selected topics are promoted.

Results are ranked according to their relevance to the search criteria entered by the user. For the calculation of relevance, the values of several factors are added together:
Relevance = Intrinsic importance + Topic relevance + Text importance + Spatial matching
No text search has been done, therefore Text importance is not used in this case for the relevance calculation.
The search has not been restricted to any spatial delimitation, therefore Spatial Matching is not used in this case for the calculation of relevance.
Intrinsic importance
The datasets being searched can be assigned an intrisic importance. Datasets considered to be the most important or of highest value are given a high intrinsic importance and less relevant datasets are given a low intrinsic importance.
Datasets considered more important are more likely to have a higher relevance and therefore tend to appear at the top of the list of results. Of course, if a dataset is very important, but does not respond well to the search text, it will not be displayed at the top.
Topic relevance
For each dataset, among the topic categories selected by the user in the filter by topic section, the one that best covers the dataset is taken. The value that indicates how well the dataset covers that topic is incorporated in this factor for the calculation of relevance.
Text importance
When typing a search text, the similarity with this text is the factor that usually most influences the order of the results. The system quantifies the order as a weighted sum of values coming from:- Similarity between the search text (or any of its translations) and the dataset title.
- Similarity between the search text (or any of its translations) and the dataset description.
- Similarity between the search text (or any of its translations) and the dataset keywords.
- Similarity between the broader/narrower terms (or any of their translations) and the dataset title.

- Similarity between the related terms (or any of their translations) and the dataset title.

Spatial matching
A value is incorporated into the relevance calculation that evaluates how well the search area matches the boundary or limits of the dataset. Datasets covering small areas will not easily be offered when searching at European level and vice versa.
Dataset that have been searched inside
The system searches inside some dataset, providing subsets of records in a database or features in a layer. The number of selected records or features is displayed like this:

Clicking on the number of selected features (left link)opens a window that allows you to display the selected records on a map and the table with the main attributes. From there you can download the selected elements to different formats: shapefile, csv, geojson, etc.
You can also click on the name of the layer to which the features belong (right link) and display and query the entire layer in the EGDI map viewer.
When a dataset is not found in the metadata-based search but, with the same search criteria, features are found inside the dataset, then the dataset will be displayed in the results list.
When a search text is typed and a dataset is found in the metadata-based search, but the search on data returns no features, the system shows 0 features and warning because the system allows you to open features that could be valid for the search in the selected spatial boundary.
