QAFI - Quaternary-Active Faults Database of Iberia

QAFI database is a repository of faults demonstrating evidence of activity in the last 2.6 Ma, and hence, they deform either rocks, sediments or landforms from the Quaternary period. QAFI is revised and updated on a periodic basis as progress on the geological knowledge of the territory takes place, so, it cannot be considered complete but updated according to the available scientific literature at the date of release.

QAFI is not a database of active faults for seismorresistant provisions, as the definition of an active fault depends on the type of infrastructure to be designed. For example, the Eurocode-8 considers active faults those with probed activity in the last 125,000 years. QAFI can be used by the engineer or seismic analyst for preliminary identification of those faults that are important to a project.

QAFI database cannot substitute in any way detailed studies for the identification or characterization of seismogenic sources for specific sites, particularly for the design of critical or strategic infrastructure, or for civil protection plans or land management of specific territories. In these cases QAFI main utility is to serve as a platform for guiding further in-depth studies. For fault-specific studies QAFI users are strongly encourage to consult the original sources of information and if necessary contact the main authors or compilers of the data.

Neither the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME-CSIC), the authors of the design, or the compilers of the database are responsible in any case, neither directly nor indirectly, of the consequences that could be derived from the use of the Quaternary-Active Faults Database of Iberia (QAFI), both in what respects to the data itself as well as to the cartography of the fault traces.
